ABSTRACT

The dynamics of a galaxy can not be described by gravity alone, stars and gas do not behave in the same way and are mediated by processes that take place at a huge range of scales involving stellar physics and the dynamics of the magnetized multi-phasic interstellar medium. If this picture is not complex enough, there is also dark matter, that,  while undetected, is expected to provide the seed for galaxy formation, evolve with the galaxy forming a host halo, and provide the gravitational support that holds galaxies together. Thus, the problem of galaxy formation is multidisciplinary and multiscale. I will show results from cosmological and isolated simulations of galaxy formation and evolution, aiming to highlight the potential of numerical simulations to bridge different fields, and the importance of the connections between observations and simulations as a tool to disentangle different models of interstellar medium dynamics, stellar physics, dark matter dynamics, and their impact on their host galaxy.
